SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Barbara Eder — contemporary painting.

ABSTRACT & FIGURATIVE PAINTING · MUNICH

Barbara Eder is a Munich-based artist whose work brings abstract and figurative painting together. Her paintings explore perception, memory, identity and inner emotional processes. Layered colour, overpainting and expressive textures are characteristic of her visual language.

Born in Madras, India, in 1971, she grew up in an international environment. Early encounters with different cultures continue to inform her perspective. She attended a specialist upper-secondary school for art and design (Fachoberschule Gestaltung) and completed two vocational training programmes: one in theatrical make-up and one in media design. Her experience with colour, facial expression and visual staging continues to inform her artistic practice. Her artistic practice began in 1997 alongside other professional pursuits; over time, painting became the central focus of her work.

Over a period of fifteen years, she also worked as a fashion and photographic model. This experience heightened her awareness of body language, expression and staging, which continue to inform her figurative imagery.

Her works have been presented at exhibitions and art fairs including ART Karlsruhe, ARTMUC and the Discovery Art Fair Cologne. Through KLAREKUNST she presents her work and catalogue.

MY JOURNEY

Memory becomes image.

“Art gives me the freedom to see the familiar anew.”

I was born in Madras, southern India, in 1971. Through my father’s diplomatic and scientific work for the United Nations, I grew up in an international setting. Our family lived in India and Africa for several years, experiences that shaped how I see the world.

After returning to Germany, I attended a specialist upper-secondary school for art and design (Fachoberschule Gestaltung). I also completed two professional training programmes, one in theatrical make-up and the other in media design. Both disciplines deepened my understanding of colour, form, facial expression and visual staging, and continue to inform my painting.

For fifteen years I also worked as a fashion and photographic model. Observing how posture, movement, expression, light and perspective change the way we perceive a person continues to inform my figurative painting. In my works, visible appearance becomes a starting point for exploring inner experience.

Painting has been part of my life since 1997. What began alongside other professional pursuits gradually became the centre of my creative practice. My paintings bring human figures into dialogue with abstract structures, intertwined lines and layers of colour. My themes are identity, transformation and the emotional stories beneath the surface.

I live and work in Munich and present my art internationally.
